KB10456 - Please explain the options for client-server and web-server development using TatukGIS tools.
There are three possibilities:
1) Using the DK-VCL edition. The DK-VCL may be used to develop either a client-server or true web server application. The DK-VCL developer can use the VCL source code to customize the bitmap serving procedure to optimize the performance for a web server environment. One option for the creation of either client-server or web server applications with the DK-VCL is to use the DK-VCL product with the IntraWeb development environment, which TatukGIS supports via the DK-VCL Component for IntraWeb. The DK-VCL IntraWeb Component is provided with the purchase of a DK-VCL (source code version) license.
2) Using the DK-ActiveX or DK.NET editions. The DK-ActiveX or DK.NET edition can be used to develop client-server applications (in which software is installed on each user station). These DK editions can theoretically also be used to develop a web bitmap image server solution, although this is not a main focus of these products. The DK-ActiveX and DK.NET do not contain an ASP.NET control for web development and these products are not optimized for bitmap image serving (which can result in performance/speed deficiency issues when the product is used for this purpose).
The licensing of DK product (all editions) requires the payment of a DK Server Deployment Royalty for each server computer to which a DK based server application is deployed (installed).
3) Using the TatukGIS Internet Server (IS) product. This product is a ready-to-go GIS web bitmap image server based on Microsoft ASP.NET technology, and supporting the same object API and comprehensive functionality as the DK product. It contains both an ASP.NET control for web development and a Flash client control for smooth on-line map dragging and zooming and the editing of map geometry and attributes. Therefore, the development of a web server solution using the IS would typically require much less effort than the development of a web server solution using the DK product.
The IS product is licensed per deployment server/computer.
