KB10642 - Can the Editor be used to systematically create a point layer from a polygon layer? I want to create a new layer with one vector point located at the
centriod position of each of the polygons in my polygon layer, but each point should have exactly the same attributes as the corresponding polygon. My objective is to convert a layer with small polygons into points so that I can then represent the points with a symbol.
Yes, this can be easily accomplished for the entire layer in a single step using the topology builder functionality supported in the Editor. With the polygon layer open as the selected layer in the Editor, select the Tools/Topology/Topology menu to open the "Topology builder and corrector" combo box. Then select "Polygonal" as the Topology type and select the "Centroids" option under Additional Layers. When the topology project is generated, it will create the point layer which you are looking for, with the same attributes as the source polygon layer.
